Indiana Senate OKs ban on tanning beds for those under 16
INDIANAPOLIS — The perfect tan before prom might be harder for some minors to get if some Indiana lawmakers have their way.
A bill that would ban those youths from using beds at tanning salons passed 30-17 Thursday afternoon in the state Senate. Children under 16 can now use the beds if a parent is present.
Those between age 16 and 18 could tan alone if a parent or guardian gives written permission.
Before becoming law, the bill first must pass through the House and be signed by the governor. The bill would go into effect immediately.
Sen. Jim Smith of Charlestown voted against the bill. He questioned why it does not restrict minors from tanning at in-home beds and whether responsibility falls on the state or parents.
